Odyssey 2000

With the beginning of 2001, the new millennium truly starts. Year 2000 was a transitional year. It looked like it belonged to the new millennium, but was actually part of the old one.

We experienced transitions as well during 2000. Steve's father, John J. Nahm, Jr. and uncle, James Albert (Bill) Nahm, both died in September, which was a very sad time for us.  During 2000, Steve's niece, Dianna, and her family moved into the family home at 9200 Chenoak Court, which allowed his father to spend the year with them, including his great-grandson, Holden Conner, who had his first birthday this year.

Life is an odyssey, and there were joyful times in 2000 that balanced the sad. We attended weddings, reunions, travelled, and had rewarding times at work. During our travels we were able to visit with many family members and longtime friends. We treasure the time we are able to spend with them.

Steve participated in several events as part of his work.

  • EJTE Class
  • Stans Staff Party
  • Team J2EE
  • In the Spring and early Summer we enjoyed a wedding, a visit by Steve's friend Jim, and a visit to Baltimore at Easter.
  • Spring 2000
  • Easter
  • TOC Seminar
  • Steve's father's funeral was an occasion for family members to gather to remember his life. His granddaughter, Dianna, presented a beautiful and touching euology for John at his funeral. Steve also spoke at his father's funeral, remembering scout trips that John planned.
  • Dianna's Eulogy for Poppy
  • Steve's Eulogy for Dad
  • September
  • In the fall, we travelled to Cyprus and to Baltimore for Thanksgiving.
  • Cyprus
  • Fall 2000
  • As the year drew to an end, Steve visited friends in Boston and Connecticut. We also travelled to Pullman to spend Christmas with Jane's parents:
  • Nantucket
  • Cee and Boris
  • Year End
  • Holiday Time

  • Steve writes:
"I saw the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey during my 8th grade class' outing. I was confused by the impenetrable plot of the latter third of the movie, but impressed by the vision on the future that the movie presented. I'm sure the movie had a strong influence on my interest in science and computers.

"I discussed that future with my brother, John. 2001 seemed a long time away. We wondered where we would be, what we would be doing at the time. Would we have families of our own? Would our parents still be living? We would be in our forties, middle-age. We were about to embark on the adventure of our life, and by 2001 we expected that we would have accomplished a lot.

"After Dad's passing, I look forward again. Dad was entering his forties when I was born. Nearly everything I experienced of his life happened during the period of life that I am entering. I know my 'second half' will be very different than his, but I would like to draw from that spirit and energy that he demonstrated during those years."

We wish all of you a good and healthy odyssey of your own in 2001, and look forward to hearing from you or visiting with you this year.
